Dean's Rag Book Company was based in Fleet Street, London and began in 1903. It was famous for producing a book made out of cloth, hence the name Dean's Rag Book Co. These books were extremely successful and this was incorporated into their trademark which consists of a dog tearing at a rag book.
The first Dean Teddy bears were produced around 1915. Early bears were made from mohair, stuffed with wood wool and were fully jointed. Bears from the 1920's and 1930's often had black embroidered noses and shaved muzzles.
Some bears could be identified by a silver button in the left ear and was impressed with the words "Dean's Rag Book Co Ltd". Between 1920 and 1955 bears had fabric labels sewn onto the right foot pad and a paper label around the neck.
Dean's are still trading today but are now based in Wales.
